8th grade homework week of 05/06/13:  class date 05/07/13: PRESENTATION: Choose a film composer for this presentation.  Give the name of a main movie and the director that this composer has worked with on it.  The presentation should include:  Names of other important movies that this composer has composed music for, basic facts about the composer, date of birth, the span of time the composer has been composing film music, Awards nominated for or won and other directors they have worked with.  You may do this presentation with a partner or on your own.  DO NOT WRITE OUT AS A REPORT!  Presentations are DUE: Tuesday, May 21, 2013.

6th grade homework week of 04/22/13:  class date 04/23/13: 6th grade Percussion Project
Assigned:  April 23, 2013
Create, present and play a percussion instrument:
·         Students will use household items or things from nature to create a percussion instrument. Students will bring in their percussion instrument to present to the class, explain the materials they used, how they put it together and play it.
·         Students will be able to play a short rhythm pattern on it which they have written.
·         Students will turn in a paper with the list of items used to make it and details on how they put it together and the written rhythm.  The paper should look like a recipe: the items listed exactly including any tools needed, glue or other adhesive used, measurements and the details on how to construct it should be step by step.  There should be enough detail for another person to be able to follow it and create the same instrument.
·         Some suggested materials they can use:  buckets, cardboard containers, wood, fabrics, sticks, plastic bottles etc.  These materials should be covered, painted or changed in some way so they no longer look like the original thing.
·         This percussion instrument should be creative, show that the student has researched various percussion instruments and they should create a name for the instrument.
·         The student will present the instrument and all the details to the class.  They will also play the written rhythm they have created on the instrument.
The instrument along with the written description, materials and detailed instructions on how to create it is Due:  Tuesday, May 21st.  They must have all of this for class on this date. 

4th grade homework week of 04/22/13:  class date 04/23/13:  Yankee Doodle- Students will practice ALL of the song for next week.  Students will have a playing test on any 8 measure section of Yankee Doodle.  This song is being performed on Grandparent/Special Friend Day on May 17th.  Playing test next class: Tuesday, April 29, 2013.

7th grade homework week of 04/15/13: class date 04/18/13:  Class presentation- The Sounds of Soul- Students were given a typed page with detailed requirements for this presentation.  There are several musicians and groups from the DVD on this music era which are watching in class.  Students are to choose someone from the list to research and make a presentation board and note cards for.  The details are on the handout I gave out in class today.  This presentation which is a large part of their 4th quarter grade is DUE: Thursday, May 16, 2013.

8th grade homework week of 04/01/13:  class date 04/02/13:  Choose a movie that you have recently watched.  Give the name of the movie, the name of the director and the name of the composer who wrote the music.  Find a scene WITH music- watch it the first time with NO sound and write a description of the scene.  Watch the same scene again with the sound and describe how the music made you feel about the scene.  Assignment Due:  April 16, 2013.

6th grade homework week of 3/25/13:  class date 3/26/13:  Write a 4 measure rhythm in 4/4 time to perform on a drum or maraca.  Include the rhythm pattern dotted eighth sixteenth note = 1 beat, quarter note = 1 beat, paired eighth notes  = 1 beat and quarter rests = 1 beat of silence.  Due Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

6th grade homework week of 03/11/13: class date 03/12/13:  Mingolello's class:  Research ONE percussion instrument presented in class today.  Write about its origin (when and where it began), how it is made and if it has changed over time and if it is pitched or un-pitched.  Include a picture of the instrument.  Will present to class. Due:  Tuesday, March 19th.  Casey's class:  If you did not complete this assignment for today, it must be completed by next week, Tuesday March 19th.  You will be presenting the information to the class.

4th grade homework week of 03/11/13: class date 03/12/13: The fourth grade playing test scheduled for today has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, March 19th.  The fourth grade was on a field trip and did not attend music class.

3rd grade homework week of 1/21/13: class date 1/24/13:   Practice tonguing quarter note B's.  Blow gently and softly.  Use the Left Hand to cover the correct holes.  Be able to play B's correctly on Thursday, 1/31/13.

4th grade homework week of 1/21/13: class date 1/22/13:  Practice Conga Bells from letter B and D on line 3 to the end. Playing test for Mrs. Battaglia's class on Tuesday 1/29/13.  Mrs. Hawkins class practice this section of the song also.  Be able to play correctly on Tuesday 1/29/13.

6th grade homework week of 1/21/13: class date 1/22/13: Mrs. Casey's Class: Write a 6 measure rhythm in 2/4 time.  Use the ti ta ti rhythm at least one time and the grouped 4 sixteenth notes two times in the rhythm.  Write the rhythm syllables under the notes: ex. ta for quarter note, titi for paired eighth notes, tiritiri for the 4 sixteenth notes etc.  Assignment due: Tuesday 1/29/13.

5th grade homework week of 1/14/13: class date 1/17/13: GROUP A- P. 28- Symphony No. 9-line 1 and 2 practice for playing test next week: Thursday January 24, 2013.  GROUP B- Study information on Beethoven for next Thursday January 24, 2013.

6th grade homework week of 1/14/13: class date 1/15/13:  Write a 4 measure rhythm in 2/4 time.  One measure must have the syncopated rhythm eighth quarter eighth note (ti-ta-ti) and you must use the rhythm of 4 sixteenth notes grouped together one time in any measure.  Also write the rhythm syllables under each note as I did in the example.  Assignment Due:  Tuesday, 1/22/13 for all 6th grade.

4th grade homework week of 1/14/13: class date 1/15/13:  Correct all wrong answers on your test in RED pen or RED pencil.  Do not erase the original answers.  Write the correct answers next to them.  Practice Conga Bells starting on line 3 at letters B and D to the end.  Playing test next Tuesday, 1/22/13.

3rd grade homework week of 1/7/13: class date 1/10/13:  Memorize the letter names of the lines and spaces on the musical staff.  Memorize the sentence for the letter names of the lines and the word for the spaces.  Students will take a quiz on this information on Thursday, 1/17/13.

7th grade homework week of 12/31/12: class date 1/3/13:  Choose one of the 4 members of the Beatles: Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison or John Lennon.  Research the member you choose: Write a one page paper-include birth/death (if applies) dates, where they were born.  Include background information, their contributions to the group.  Also include information on their music careers after the Beatles.  Include information on songs/albums of the Beatles as well as other songs/albums after the Beatles.

5th grade homework week of 12/3/12: class date 12/6/12:  Group B- practice line 2 of Jingle Bells.
Group A & B Study for written music test.  Test will cover:  recorder fingerings for notes, high D, C, B, A, G, F#, E and low D and being able to write these notes on the musical staff.  Know the definitions for tempo and dynamics, know what mf and p stand for and what they mean.  Know the kinds of notes we have been playing in Michael Row the boat- quarter, dotted quarter, half, whole and eighth note and how beats they receive in 4/4 time.  Know how to identify the key signature, time signature and incomplete measure for this song.  Written Test:  Thursday, December 13, 2012.

8th grade homework week of 12/3/12:  class date 12/4/12:   Reminder- Composer Presentations are due on Tuesday, 12/11/12.  Be prepared to present your information.  See below for details on this presentation.  They are listed in last weeks homework when I assigned this.

6th grade homework week of 12/3/12:  class date 12/4/12:  All 6th grade students will take a written music test next week.  It will cover:  Soprano recorder fingerings for the notes, F#, G, A, B, C, and D and ALTO fingerings (only for students with alto recorders) for the notes, low G, B, C, D, E and high G.  It will also cover note values in 6/8 time for dotted quarter note, eighth note, quarter note  and also dotted quarter rest.  Students will also have to identify the time signature and KEY signature in a song. They will also need to know the meaning of D.C. al Fine- including what the letter D.C. stand for.  TEST: Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

4th grade homework week of 12/3/12: class date 12/4/12:  All 4th grade students will take a written music test next week.  It will cover musical terms-dynamics, tempo, fingerings on the recorder for the notes G, A, B, C and D. It will also cover notes that move by step, skip and stay the same, and identifying the treble clef, time signature and the repeat sign.  Students will also have to write the letter names for notes that are written on the musical staff.  TEST: Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

5th grade homework week of 11/26/12: class date 11/29/12- GROUP A- Practice all of We Wish You a Merry Christmas.  Playing test next Thursday 12/6/12.  GROUP B- Practice the 1st line of Jingle Bells.  Playing test next Thursday 12/6/12.

8th grade homework week of 11/26/12:  class date 11/27/12:  Composer presentations:  Choose a composer from the Baroque Period 1600-1750 or Classical Period 1750-1820.  Include the following information:  Characteristics of the music during the time period you chose for the composer.  Name, date of birth/death, where they were born, who influenced them and name specific works they composed and facts about the works.  Also include one musical example. Due: Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

7th grade homework week of 10/22/12:  Class date 10/25/12: Complete crossword puzzle on Bob Dylan.  Research a folk singer or folk group from the 1960’s.  Students will find information on another folk singer or folk group from the 60’s.  Write in full sentences- Name of singer or group, date of birth and death,  if applies, historical information on their life, music and any important facts you discover about them. The type of music they sang and title of 2 well-known songs they are famous for from that era.  Due Thursday, November 8, 2012.

6th grade homework week of 1/23/12: Students will research one or two percussion instuments presented in class.  The research will include:  the origin of the instrument (when it was invented and how it was made), how it is made now, how you play it and if it is pitched or unpitched.

4th grade homework week of 1/23/12: Both classes will be taking a written quiz on the following information. Students will have to write the letter names of the lines and spaces on the musical staff in the correct order, starting from the bottom of the staff to the top.  Students will have to write the note given on the correct line or space on the musical staff.  The notes will be the ones they are currently playing on the recorder. 7th grade homework week of 10/25: Complete crossword puzzle on Bob Dylan.  Research a folk singer or folk group from the 1960's.  Students will present to the class the following information on a folk singer or folk group:  Name of singer or group, years lived, type of music they sang and title of 2 well-known songs that they recorded during the 1960's.

5th grade homework week of 10/25:  Group A: practice new notes low E and D, page 21, line 1.  Group B:  Practice Rockin' on page 10.  Playing test on Thursday November 3, 2011.

4th grade homework week of 10/25:  Practice the first line of Quiet Evening-sheet music.  Also know the names of all the notes on line 2 of the song.  Homework due:  Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011.

5th grade homework week of 10/17/11: Group A- Practice new notes high D. Group B: Complete playing test on Indian Chant.

8th grade homework week of 10/17/11:  8th grade will have a written music test next week on Tuesday, October 25th.  I have given them a study guide which has all the information listed that they need to know.  The test is on musical terms, instrument families, dynamic and tempo terms which all related to movie scenes the students watched and analyzed in class.  Test:  Tuesday October 25, 2011

7th grade homework week of 10/10/11: All 7th grade music classes will have a written test on Irving Berlin and Al Hirt.  Students were given the exact information to study in class.  Test will be on Thursday, October 20, 2011

8th grade homework week of 10/3:  Choose one of 3 Composers; Bach, Brahms or Tchaikovsky.  Write 2 paragraphs to include, full name of composer, years of their life, musical period and characteristics of music from that period.  Also include 3 musical compositions and dates they were composed.

6th grade homework week of 10/3:  Written Music test on the six musical terms defined in music class, note names and number of beats and writing syllables for rhythms given in music class.  Music Test on Tuesday 10/18.

4th grade homework week of 10/3:  Recorder playing test- page 7, French Song.  Students will play the first 4 measures of the song.  Playing test on Tuesday 10/18.

5th grade homework week of 9/26:  Page 7, Rhythm chart 2, line 4- Write the pitch (note) B, A or G over each quarter note to create your own melody.  Practice playing melody for next weeks class.  Assignment due, Thursday 10/6/11.

7th grade homework week of 9/19: Research a famous trumpet player.  Give me their name, years lived, and 2 important facts. Also, find a musical example played this trumpet player. 6th grade homework- Study the 6 musical terms given in class on Tuesday, 9/6.  There will be a written quiz on these terms next Tuesday, 9/13/11.
